CHAPTER FIVE

"There's no one here," Diego said as they walked the circumference of the building inside and out. It was a standard warehouse just outside Watertown, New York and according to the intelligence they received was the base of operations for the kindred that was supposedly threatening Coven DuCane. It was where their target reportedly resided, but it was obvious that no one had been in this warehouse in many years.

Assuming a setup, they methodically moved back and away and disappeared into the woods that bordered the structure on the East. They encountered no one and no signs of anyone. The entire area was abandoned. They split up maintaining a connection through their earpieces and staked out the area for the remainder of the night.

At dawn, Kingston and Diego met at their vehicle which they had hidden several miles away. They sent in their report and settled in as they started on their long drive back to Pittsburgh. Nothing was said for the first few miles each was lost in their own thoughts and calculations.

“Steven says that the information may have been improperly dated.” Diego drawled his displeasure apparent. He side-eyed Kingston, which was a look that spoke volumes, Diego hated stupidity.

“How long has Steven been our handler?” Kingston enquired.

“Three years.”

“We need a new handler. A mistake such as this is intolerable.”

"I agree. It would have been simple to check up on the credibility of this tip, and he obviously did not." Diego began texting immediately. "I'll file the request with Ismael." Ismael was second in command to Master Louis DuCane, and he directed and controlled all special operations teams for the Coven.

"I have a bad feeling," Kingston admitted after a few minutes.

“What about?”

“Do you think that perhaps this assignment was all about getting us away from the Hadden Coven?” Kingston knew he hit a nerve when Diego rounded on him with a look of panic.

“Someone wanting us away from the Coven or away from Benny?” He asked his voice tight and clipped.

"Either way it could impact Benny. Call the Coven and have them put extra guards on our beloved and share our concerns. Something isn't right here, and I don't want to take chances on Benny's safety." Kingston stepped on the gas, and the car began to maneuver the back roads at top speed.

Benny sat with Easton and tried to listen to his lecture and description of cell phone technology and the breakdown of the integral parts, but his heart just wasn’t in it today. He was more the give me the pretty new phone type of guy anyway. He understood how to operate it every part of it, but he really didn’t care about how it was made.

"I'm not a very good student today." He admitted after failing to hear most of what Easton had just told him. Easton just smiled, he was a good-natured person who rarely got upset, and today Benny could appreciate that.

He hated to waste the man's time. Easton could be schooling someone who actually was interested.
